Our management team
General Healthcare Group (GHG) has seen a positive period of rapid expansion since our latest management team came together in 2006/07. Over the past two and a half years, our revenue has grown by around a third and EBITDA by approximately 40%.
Stephen Collier, Group Chief Executive
Stephen Collier has worked in health care since the 1980s, having previously been in practice as a barrister. He worked as a corporate lawyer for GHG, and following the Group's successful stock exchange listing in 1988 moved to Glasgow to become Executive Director of Ross Hall Hospital. From 1991 he held various corporate roles, including managing hospitals and service businesses across Europe and the United States. In 1997 he became the Group's General Counsel and worked extensively across healthcare transactions and financing. He was appointed as a main Board Director in 2006. In early 2011 Stephen was appointed as Group Strategy Director, and subsequently as Group Chief Executive.
Stephen has a law degree from University College London and a Masters from the LSE. He is a fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine, a Bencher of Lincoln's Inn, and Treasurer-elect of the Bar Council.
Professor Duncan Empey FRCP, Group Medical Director
Duncan Empey is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and joined GHG as Group Medical Director in 2008. Prior to that, he was Medical Director at Capio Healthcare from 2005 to 2007 and Medical Director of Barts and The London NHS Trust between 1994 and 2001. Duncan has been Honorary Consultant Physician to King Edward VII's Hospital, Sister Agnes, in London since 1995.
He was Foundation Professor and Dean of the Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire Postgraduate Medical School from 2005 to 2009. Duncan has also been a member of the British Thoracic Society Council and of that society's Professional Standards Committee, and he is a Trustee of the British Lung Foundation.
Catherine Ward, Group Director, People and Communications
Catherine Ward has extensive experience within HR management and consultancy: she has previously acted as HR Director for BAA and the BBC. She has worked for KPMG as a consultant and for SHL as Consultancy Director, and has provided post merger consultancy support to several organisations.
Catherine has a BSc and an MSc from the University of London, and is qualified as a CIPD.
John Von Klemperer, Managing Director - Hospital Division
John Von Klemperer joined GHG in September 2006 as Regional Director and was promoted to Managing Director - South Division in October 2008. In July 2009 he was appointed to his current role. Prior to this, John served in a similar position for Netcare Hospital Group in South Africa for 16 years.
John completed the Executive Development Programme at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, in 1981.
