patient satisfaction rating of good, very good or excellent (Patient satisfaction survey carried out by Howard Warwick & Associates, Jan - Sept 2009)
Chief Executive's statement
Welcome to our first annual report focusing on the social and environmental performance of General Healthcare Group and its operating company, BMI Healthcare.
Over the last few years we have made tremendous progress in consistently delivering quality healthcare and value for our patients. We have expanded the geographic network of our BMI Healthcare hospitals so that more people can benefit from the care that we provide. We have reinvested £170m into training our staff,
upgrading our facilities and purchasing state-of-the-art medical equipment. No wonder our patient satisfaction levels are consistently second to none.
As a healthcare provider, we take care of individuals when they are at their most vulnerable. Our hospitals are an integral part of the communities that we serve. Every day, our friendly and highly skilled staff help to change people’s lives for the better so that they can live, work and look after their families, often in less pain and always secure in the knowledge that we are there to help them whenever they need us.
Because of this, many of the principles of corporate social responsibility are inherent in the way we do business, and have shaped our approach and policies. Both corporately and at an individual level, we sponsor a range of healthcare education and outreach programmes, charities and fundraising events throughout the year, and we actively encourage our staff to become involved in them. Inside this report, you will learn about some of the people whose lives we’ve touched in the past year.
We know we have a responsibility to make sure that we not only offer a safe and secure environment for our employees and patients, but that we have a positive impact on the local economy and infrastructure of the
communities we serve.
We are concerned to reduce our carbon footprint as far as possible and run our operations more sustainably. In managing environmental issues, we believe that even small changes can make a big difference.
That’s why we plan equipment, investment maintenance and work routines to support our staff and other colleagues to conserve resources and minimise unnecessary energy consumption. We also ask our suppliers to show us that they too, are striving to minimise their impact on the environment.
We continually seek to improve the way that we run our business and rely on all our stakeholders – patients, clinical consultants, staff and suppliers – to give us the valuable feedback that enables us to lead the way in clinical quality and governance.
We are extremely proud of the standards that our business delivers in all aspects of its operations, including Corporate Social Responsibility. This first report sets out our achievements during the past year, our priorities for the year ahead and, implicitly, the values that underpin our business.
Most importantly, it provides an ever rising target for us to drive our business forward in a way that benefits everyone, now and in the future.
