In 2006, General Healthcare Group’s majority shareholder became Network Healthcare Holdings Limited (Netcare), an investment holding company listed on the JSE, South Africa, which operates through its subsidiaries the largest private hospital networks in South Africa.
At 31 March 2007, Netcare managed 122 private hospitals and clinics, equipped with more than 12,100 beds. For the year ended 30 September 2006, Netcare had consolidated revenue of £799 million, operating profit of £108 million, total assets of £3,476 billion and a market capitalisation of £1,518 million.
Netcare was founded in 1994 and listed on the JSE Limited on 4 December 1996 with six hospitals. Since 1996 it has acquired several other small and independent hospital groups in South Africa, notably Clinic Holding Limited and Excel Medical Holdings Limited.
During fiscal 2001 Netcare acquired Medicross, a managed health provider network of 70 medical and dental centres across South Africa. In January 2006 Medicross acquired Primecure Holdings, a provider of primary care services for the emerging market with a further 30 centres and 155,000 managed care lives.
In 2002 Netcare entered the United Kingdom market to provide specialised health care services on contract to the National Health Service. In May 2006 Netcare acquired a controlling 52.6% interest in General Healthcare Group, which owns BMI Healthcare, the largest private acute care hospital provider in the United Kingdom.
